Thank you for the latest post on medicinal herbs for rabbits. I have most of these growing and will start utilizing these for the rabbits also.
Can anyone give me the low-down on selling rabbit meat? I have someone that wants to start buying from me, but I have no idea what the laws are or where to find out what the laws are. What if I sell to more than one person? If “selling” is a problem, could I trade for something and avoid any legal stuff? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Varies by State, here in Maine it must be butchered and packaged by a USDA processor with a license for rabbits, Then you must get a retail vendors permit for meat, have your freezer tested by the state if you store it for resale. What state are you in?
Hmmm, I don’t know why my last response didn’t show. Anyway, I was just saying that I’m in Louisiana, but it sounds like this is something I don’t want to get involved in. Thanks for replying!
For us it is just easier to take our live rabbits that we want butchered to a licensed and state approved butcher. We talked to him to see what all was involved for the state of Wisconsin and it was more than we wanted to get involved in. You are then subject to inspections during the year. We saw his facility and the freezers and clean up area etc and the expense was more than what we would get for selling the meat. To recoup your expenses was a lengthy time.
I agree, unless you are going to be selling on a large scale.
